Infinity ITS Missions: Laying Out Objective Rooms, Consoles & Quadrants

Most Infinity terrain advice stops at one word: more. And it is true that a sparse table punishes Infinity players badly — a single unbroken firelane can end a game on turn one. But once you have enough terrain, the harder question is where it goes. ITS missions are not generic kill-'em-all scraps. They ask you to hold quadrants, walk a Specialist to a console, or clear an objective room. A table that is dense but badly arranged makes those missions either impossible or trivial.

This guide is about layout for scenario play. It assumes you already own a reasonable pile of buildings and are ready to think about placement rather than volume.

Start with the deployment zones, not the centre

The most common layout error is building a gorgeous city centre and then discovering both deployment zones are wide open. In N4, a model that can see a deployment zone from across the board will shred it on the first Order. Before you place a single centre-of-table piece, put two or three solid blockers in each DZ so an attacker has to commit and move rather than shoot from a safe corner.

What you want is total line-of-fire denial across the long axis. Stand at your opponent's edge, get your eye down at model height, and look. If you can see more than about a third of the far deployment zone, add a building. Objective rooms: build them, don't fake them

Missions like Rescue, Frontline and the various console-hunt scenarios reward a genuinely enclosed interior. A building with a solid roof and no way in is just a wall. An objective room needs at least two entrances, ideally on different faces, so the attacker has a choice and the defender has to split attention.

This is where modular interior systems earn their keep. For ITS play that flexibility matters: an objective room sized for a 25mm base scramble plays very differently from one that can hold a TAG.

Practical dimensions: aim for an interior of roughly 8" x 8" with two doorways. Smaller and the room becomes a single-model deathtrap where whoever wins the first Face-to-Face roll wins the objective. Larger and it stops functioning as a room at all.

Consoles and quadrant balance

Quadrant-scoring missions live or die on symmetry of opportunity, not symmetry of appearance. Your table does not need to be mirrored — that looks dull — but each quadrant should offer a comparable mix of cover, a route in that is not a single choke point, and something worth standing on.

A useful check before deployment: walk each quadrant and answer three questions. Can a link team physically fit and move through it? Is there at least one piece of total cover a Specialist can reach in two Orders? Can the quadrant be shot into from more than one direction? If any quadrant fails all three, it will simply never be contested, and the mission collapses into a two-quadrant game.

Scatter and street furniture do most of the work here. Vehicles, kiosks and service clutter break up the ground floor without eating the footprint a building would. Verticality is a mission tool, not decoration

Infinity is one of the few games where rooftops genuinely matter, and ITS missions frequently place objectives at ground level specifically to pull models down off them. That tension only works if the vertical layer is connected. Isolated rooftops with no walkways create camping spots; linked rooftops create routes, and routes create decisions.

Elevated walkways, stairs and rail lines are the connective tissue. One rule of thumb: every elevated position should have at least two ways up. A rooftop reachable only by one ladder is a fortress; a rooftop with a ladder and a walkway is a position that can be flanked.

Bases, silhouettes and honest line of sight

Infinity uses silhouette templates, so how a model sits on its base directly affects what it can see. Wildly uneven sculpted bases cause arguments about whether a model is visible over a wall. Consistent base height across your force keeps line-of-sight checks quick and uncontroversial. Assembly notes for scenario terrain

These kits arrive as unpainted printed parts, so a little assembly discipline pays off at the table. Dry-fit every wall and walkway before you glue anything — pieces that clip together should clip without force. Clean the mating surfaces lightly with a hobby knife where needed. For anything you want to reconfigure between missions, resist gluing: friction-fit walls let you resize an objective room for the next scenario in seconds.

Paint for readability. A mid-tone building with lighter edge highlights reads clearly under club lighting; a dark, heavily weathered block makes it genuinely hard to judge whether a model is in partial cover. Keep the interior of objective rooms lighter than the exterior so players can see what is going on inside from a normal seated height.

A ten-minute setup routine

Before each game, run this sequence. Block both deployment zones first. Place the objective room or rooms the mission requires, centred and accessible from at least two sides. Fill each quadrant to a comparable density. Add elevated links last, checking that no rooftop is a dead end. Then crouch at each table edge and look — if you can see clean across, put something in the way.

Do that consistently and your ITS games start being decided by Order efficiency and list building rather than by who got the lucky firelane. That is the table you want.
