Are 3D Printed Vases Waterproof? A Care Guide for PETG Vases
Share
Short answer: yes. Every Northern Foundry vase is printed in PETG and holds water for fresh flowers. Here is what that means in practice and how to get the most out of yours.
What are the vases made of?
We print our vases in PETG, a strong, water-resistant plastic. It is the same family of material used for many drink bottles, and it handles water far better than the PLA often used for decorative prints. Each vase is printed to order in our Calgary, Alberta workshop.
Can I put fresh flowers in it?
Yes. Fill it with water and add your stems as you would with any vase. For arrangements you plan to keep for a long time, we recommend dropping a small glass insert or jar inside. It makes cleaning easier and keeps the inside of the vase looking new.
Dried flowers, pampas and faux stems
3D printed vases are a natural fit for dried flowers, pampas grass and faux stems because there is no water to change at all. Slim-necked bud vases are ideal for a single dried stem, while wider designs hold a full bunch.
How do I clean it?
- Rinse with lukewarm water and a little mild soap.
- Do not put it in the dishwasher or fill it with boiling water. High heat can soften the material.
- Keep it indoors, out of long periods of direct summer sun.
Why do I see fine lines on the surface?
3D printing builds each vase one thin layer at a time. Small layer lines are a normal part of the process, and on ribbed, twisted and textured designs they add to the texture as light moves across the surface.
