28mm vs 32mm vs 40mm: Which Terrain Scale Do You Need?
Share
Most of our terrain comes in more than one scale, and picking the right one makes the difference between a building your miniatures can walk into and one that looks like a dollhouse. Here is a quick guide.
What does scale mean for miniatures?
Miniature scale is roughly the height of a human figure, measured from the feet to the eyes. A 28mm figure is about 28 millimetres to eye level. Doors, windows, stairs and furniture are sized to match, so terrain and miniatures look right together.
28mm: most roleplaying games
28mm is the classic heroic scale for tabletop RPGs and many skirmish games, including Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. If you play on a 1-inch grid, 28mm terrain is almost always the right choice. Browse 28mm terrain or D&D terrain.
32mm: Warhammer 40,000 and Kill Team
Many modern wargame miniatures are a little larger, closer to 32mm. Warhammer 40,000, Kill Team and Necromunda sit here, so 32mm terrain gives their figures a better fit through doors and on walkways. Browse 32mm terrain, Warhammer 40k terrain or Kill Team terrain.
40mm: Marvel Crisis Protocol
Marvel Crisis Protocol uses large 40mm heroic figures. Standard 28mm buildings look tiny next to them, so choose the 40mm option. Browse 40mm heroic terrain or Marvel Crisis Protocol terrain.
Can I mix scales?
Scatter like crates, barrels and rubble usually works across 28mm and 32mm. Buildings are where scale matters most, because doors, stairs and floor heights need to fit your figures and their bases.
